Hair Loss Awareness Month is a time to recognize the challenges faced by those experiencing hair loss. It is more than just a physical change; it’s an emotional journey that can affect self-esteem and confidence.
For a second year, we’re sharing personal stories from our Education Ambassadors, who have bravely navigated their own hair loss experiences and wig discovery. By bringing these stories to the forefront, we aim to provide comfort, inspiration, insight, and a sense of community for those who are experiencing hair loss. As a biproduct, it can also foster greater understanding and empathy among everyone.
First, let’s meet Katy, who’s deeply passionate about helping other women find their confidence through alternative hair.
1. Tell us a bit about yourself…
My name is Katy Clatterbaugh. I am a wife of 13 years and a mom to our adorable 10-year-old son. I am a professional photographer, avid tennis player, and HUGE animal lover! Four years ago, I found a deep sense of purpose in helping women gain their confidence back. Losing my hair became a defining aspect of my life, fueling a constant battle with self-confidence. My hair, or lack thereof, posed challenges to my self-esteem from a young age.
2. How long have you been wearing wigs or hairpieces?
I started wearing hair toppers in 2018. I was at a point in my hair loss journey where I felt comfortable enough with my bio hair but needed just an extra touch of something, making toppers the right choice for me.
In 2019, I was crowned Mrs. USA Universe and travelled to China to compete in the Mrs. Universe pageant for 15 days. I was very nervous to have a team of hair and makeup work with my topper and be able to blend it effortlessly. It was then I made the decision to jump into full wigs and have been wearing wigs ever since!
3. When you started your hair loss journey, what do you wish you knew?
I wish I knew no one was looking at my hairline. I was SO self-conscious and believed everyone knew I was wearing a topper or wig, when in reality, no one EVER knew. I wore wigs for a solid year before telling anyone and every person I told was shocked! No one knew!!
4. What’s one thing you’ve learned about yourself throughout your hair loss journey?
I have an autoimmune condition that causes hair loss. I was extremely lonely, lost and felt hopeless about what my options were regarding a solution. For women, our hair is a very important part of our identity. It makes us feel feminine and beautiful. As I navigated this situation, I chose to document my story along the way. By doing so, I discovered a global community of women who struggle with hair loss.
I allowed myself to be vulnerable and upset, but at the same time take a positive outlook and finally have the hair I always dreamed of!
5. What advice would you give to a new alternative hair wearer?
Be open to the wonderful possibilities that alternative hair offers! Wigs and toppers have come a VERY long way and are no longer your grandmother’s wigs. Alternative hair can give you back the confidence you’ve been missing, encourage you to live the life you want and allow you to look fabulous while doing it all!
6. Which Jon Renau style is your favorite?
This is so hard! I have to say I am a HUGE Haute and Kristi Fan. Both are pieces I grab more than any other piece I own!
Where can you purchase Haute for yourself? Locate a Jon Renau retailer in your area.
